In brief: Yes

Cranberry extract is from cranberries.
Cranberry juice often contains sugar so using cranberry extract is better for uti's. Some studies indicate that cranberry is as effective as antibiotics for urinary tract infections caused by the e. Coli bacteria.

Consuming cranberry extract or cranberry juice releases minute amounts of foraldehyde in the bladder, this has an antibacterial effect. Antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin) trimethoprim-sulfa or cipro are much more effective.

Cranberry juice is effective because it contains L-mannose which helps coat the bladder, and bacteria )e. coli) take this up and cannot get a foothold on the baldder wall and get washed out instead of establishing an infection.

In brief: To prevent UTI ONLY

Cranberry extract attempts to concentrate the anti-oxidant components of cranberry juice in pill form. The tannins present are thought to prevent bacterial attachment.
Research has shown equivalent benefit between juice or pill, though there have not been head-to-head studies done. Incidentally, the juice/pill is not effective to treat an active uti. Studies found no benefit in that case.

In brief: Tablets or gelcaps

Cranberry extract is made from cranberries or cranberry concentrate.
Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins which interefere with bacterial adherence to bladder lining and may protect against utis. Extract is available as geltabs (schiff) or tablets (azo). Both are quite concentrated and are equivalent of many glasses of juice or coctail withour the calories.
