In brief: Yes

An ultrasound is recommended if there is continued bleeding for longer than expected after a surgical abortion.
This includes passing large clots. Also if you develop a fever; an ultrasound will identify any remaining tissue. If no fever or unexplained bleeding, an ultrasound is usually not necessary.

In brief: Yes

While not absolutely necessary unless there is excessive bleeding, an ultrasound test is safe to perform after a surgical abortion and would be able to detect any remaining tissue, known as "retained products of conception.
