I keep waking at night as if i've stopped breathing - followed by a coughing fit and wondered what it was?

In brief: Possibilities...

You should have a sleep test to determine if you have this as there are effective treatments. Without treatment, you risk developing heart disease. Another possibility is bronchospasm which would respond to inhalers if there is no sleep apnea. If you smoke, you need to quit. Good luck!

In brief: Possibly sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a common condition where one stops breathing momentarily several times a night.
The drive to breath causes one to gasp or cough. Another condition that might cause these symptoms is acid reflux, where stomach acid irritates the esophagus causing one to cough or gag. Two totally different conditions. See your doctor to see what might be your cause.
