In brief: Depends on severity

Majority of sprains involve the outside or lateral side of the ankle, affecting the anterior talofibular ligament.
If injury mainly involves this ligament and is mild will significantly improve in 3-4 wks. More severe injuries affecting additional ligaments could have some lingering symptoms for 6-8 wks. Initially elevate, ice and modify activity to avoid exacerbation of pain
