This is usually caused by a blockage in the supplying artery. Blockages are most often caused by atherosclerosis which is a slowly progressive disease. Sometimes the plaque (diseased part) can break off and suddenly occlude the vessel. Also the disease can cause symptoms which are ignored until it is too late.
