In brief: They usually check.
Most times, when a patient is admitted through the trauma unit, a checklist is performed and looking for contact lenses is one of those tasks on the list.
If one is found, saline is applied and they are removed. Sometimes, it takes a very close look but usually they are found. If the contact lens is left in place, the eye will usually turn red later and ophthalmology is frequently consulted.

In brief: Admission to ER
It is always a good idea to carry a copy of all of your medications, major medical problems and the fact that you are a contact lens user.
