Is the future of optometry in jeopardy considering that laser surgery is becoming more popular and effective?

In brief: Not at all

In fact, our ability to better improve the vision of our patients with laser and lens surgery is allowing optometry and ophthalmology to to concentrate on other important eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and pediatric eye care.
As well, only a small percentage of patients who can have it actually get lasik, and they will still need annual visits, keeping both professions busy!

In brief: Lasik

Laser vision correction reduces the need for spectacles and contact lenses but may not eliminate it.
Also, as you age you will likely need reading glasses. Peoples eyes will still need to be examined and checked for disease and optometrists can do this so that they can refer the patient to an ophthalmologist as needed for treatment. So there will be plenty for optometrists to do.
