In brief: Neurologist needed

Memory loss secondary to a stroke would seem common.
Strokes are really a lack of oxygen to areas of the brain; the severity and location of which are the main indicators of the symptoms and signs one would have. A full neurology work-up to diagnose the extent and origin of the stroke is needed and a plan of rehabilitation is needed to bring back as much function as possible. Good luck!

In brief: Depends on extent

Of damage & level of functioning prior to the stroke.
In any case, there are many things you can do to improve memory. Learn some mnemonic strategies (get books in popular bookstores). Store info in memory as both words & visual images. Repeat immediately what you want to remember. Make lists & put up notes to remind you of things you need to do. Have friends call and remind you of appointments.

In brief: Speech therapy

Would work closely with a speech therapist, but might try some Ritalin (methylphenidate) which has shown some rehab value in pts where stroke affected speech.
Brain recovery proceeds over 12-18 months, but coping and various therapy approaches may consolidate gains faster.
