In brief: Immune system
Hiv infects cells in the immune system, which makes it hard for the body to fight off infections.
Hiv causes aids. Common bacteria, yeast, parasites, and viruses that may not cause serious disease in people with healthy immune systems can cause fatal illnesses in people with aids.

In brief: Damaged immunity
Hiv infection kills a class of WBC called a t 4 lymphocyte.
This particular cell is very important in regulating a large number of immune responses making it possible to fight many kinds of infections. When this cell is killed off, we become vulnerable to infections with bacteria, fungi, viruses etc.. That do not ordinarily cause disease in a normal individual.
