In brief: Gardnerella

Bacterial vaginosis is an overgrowth of normal bacteria.
The bacteria grows when there is a shift n the ph (acid/base level) of the vagina. It is not a sexually transmitted disease. It is easily treated by either an intravaginal cream for 5 days or an oral pill 2x/day for 7 days.

In brief: PH, bacteria changes

Vaginal ph can change from intercourse, menstrual bleeding, douching.
Antibiotics can alter the normal bacteria. Bv (bacterial vaginosis) usually has discharge and odor and can be diagnosed and treated by a gynecologist or family physician or nurse practitioner in women's health. Don't douche as that can worsen the problem.

In brief: Bacteria

Its bacteria in the vagina from the colon colonizing the vagina.
If you wear a thong recurrently that can do it, heavy, irregular menses can do it from the blood. Otherwise, without intercourse, it can be difficult to say. Anything that allows easy passage from the back to the front, excessive shaving, can assist the bacteria into getting to the vagina. An antibiotic called Flagyl will eliminat.
