Hepatitis a usually causes no permanent liver damage, although it can be very severe is some patients and can last up to 6 months.
If a patient who already has a chonic liver disease such as cirrhosis, hepatitis c, or autoimmune liver disease, contracts hepatitis a, it may lead to liver failure and death. Patients with pre-existing liver disease should get the hepatitis a vaccine.
