What tests are done to detect if someone has diabetes before that person starts showing symptoms of it?

In brief: Many

The simplest test to diagnose diabetes is the fasting blood test (blood draw).
If the blood sugar number is > or = to 126 twice, then you have diabetes. Equally simple is a blood draw for hemoglobin a1c. If it's > or = to 6.5% twice, then you have diabetes. You can also mix and match the two tests above. The last test is the glucose tolerance test but it is more time consuming.

In brief: Blood sugar

Fatsing blood sugar, post-prandial blood sugar and hgba1c.
In borderline situations a full glucose tolerance test may be done, but that is seldom necessary.
