In brief: Pathophysiology

Although both type i and type ii diabetes manifest with high blood sugars the basic underpinnings of the two are different.
Type i diabetes is caused by an autoimmune destruction of the beta cells which make Insulin in the pancreas. It is not caused by diet or lifestyle choices. Type ii diabetes in children is most often associated with obesity and a family history of type ii diabetes. Children with this disease are very Insulin resistant. Eventually their bodies are unable to keep up with the Insulin demands and the blood sugars rise.

In brief: Making insulin

The basic difference is in making your own insulin.
In type one, something kills off the insulin production in your pancreas.Since it is needed to move glucose from the blood into the cells, you must get it from an outside source or your blood level goes up too much & you eventually die. In type 2, you can make it but it doesn't work as effectively. You take extra or pills that make it work bett

In brief: Obesity

We are seeing dm ii in children because of excessive carb intake & weight gain and sedentary lifestyles; this was hardly ever the case in the past, since this Insulin resistance is usually caused by those same problems (as well as genetics) in adulthood.
Dmi represents an essential absence of insulin, a much more difficult situation, and has traditionally been referred to as juvenile onset dm.
