In brief: Clinical and imaging

Obviously physical examination and appropriate clinical history predate imaging workup.
Stroke is diagnosed through several techniques: a neurological examination, ct scans (most often without contrast enhancements) or MRI scans, doppler ultrasound, and arteriography. Emboli most commonly arise from the heart (especially in atrial fibrillation) but may originate from elsewhere in the arterial tree.
