Why do older men lose the hair on their heads but start growing lots of nose hair, ear hair and facial hair?

In brief: Testosterone

As men get older, testosterone gets higher and causes you to lose the good hair on your head but you start to grow it in "less useful" places.
One of the very exciting parts of getting older. :-\.

Some additional information. Testosterone tends to get lower as you get older, not higher. Men lose hair in the "male pattern baldness area " of the scalp due to hereditary gene factors.

In brief: Genetics

Hair follicles are genetically programmed.
Some will stop growing as you get older some will begin to grow and some stay the same.
