I am due for an echocardiogram test in 2 days. How accurate are they in comparison to ecgs and chest x rays? What conditions can they detect?

In brief: Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram uses sound waves to produce images of your heart.
It is used in the diagnosis and management of patients with any suspected or known heart diseases. It creates ultrasound images of heart structures including the heart muscle itself as well as valves. Doppler waves evaluate blood flow throughout the heart. This is additional information cxr and ecgs do not provide.

In brief: Very accurate

You are comparing apples to oranges.
Echocardiogram gives a 2d picture of the heart in real time and is the gold standard to assess the cardiac structure and heart valves. Structural heart defects, leaky or tight cardiac valves, size of the heart chambers is well defined by echo ( cannot be obtained accurately by x-rays or ECG ).

In brief: Echo

Echos are used to assess the contractile function of the heart ( how well the heart pumps blood) as well as to assess the valve functions .
Cxr and ekg fall short in these areas.
