In brief: Learn and support

Hypertension (high blood pressure) in a teenager is significant.
If he is obese help him lose weight. If he is sedentary, help get him exercising. Be sure he follows up with his doctor's advice and treatment. If he is taking medication, be sure he sticks with it. Encourage him to discuss side effects with his doctor. Try to help him avoid caffeine, chocolate and other stimulants.

U can also help by encouraging a work up to finfd the cause if this has not been done. Many causes of hypertension in young people can be cured so that they will not need mediactions for life

In brief: Any other causes

An 18 year old with high blood pressure also needs to be evaluated for specific correctable causes of blood pressure such as hormonal causes ( pheochromocytoma and hyperaldosteronism); renal artery stenosis which is narrowing of blood vessel to the kidneys; milder forms of coarctation or narrowing of the aorta.
