In brief: Variable

But encephalopathy is an indicator that the liver is starting to fail.
If aggressive medical therapy is not able to control this, then the patient may have only weeks to months.

In brief: Depends on cause

As previously stated, the course of cirrhosis is variable.
Especially if cancer develops. It is important to know the underlying cause as viral hepatitis tends to be more progressive than alcohol induced when there has been abstinence. Some cirrhotics can remain very well compensated for years while others may rapidly deteriorate following an infection, etc.
