What is the opinion on using umcka to fight the common cold? What about this flu that is spreading.

In brief: Limited data

No clinical trials have been run in the United States.
A couple of trials have been run in other countries that may show minimal benefit. A review of these trials concluded it "... May be effective in alleviating symptoms of acute rhinosinusitis and the common cold in adults, but doubt exists." it will probably not hurt, but personally, i wouldn't spend my money on it.

Actually, Pellargonium sidoides has been the subject of 20 clinical studies (not "a couple") involving more than 9000 patients. It has been proven efficacious not only for colds but also for sinusitis and bronchitis. Given that antibiotics have largely not been proven effective for sinusitis and bronchitis, this is my treatment of choice for these conditions. It is extremely safe, very affordable and my patients have found it quite helpful. For a review of the research see http://naturalmedicinejournal.net/pdf/NMJ_DEC09_BP.pdf

In brief: Proven effective

Umcka (pelargonium sidoides) is the best-proven treatment for colds, sinus infections & sinusitis.
It's the first thing i (& my family) take when getting sick & has helped hundreds of my patients. It's widely available in a product called umcka, sold at health food stores & many pharmacies. See http://naturalmedicinejournal.Net/pdf/nmj_dec09_bp.Pdf however, i know of no evidence it helps influenza.

While Umcka has not been proven effective (nor ineffective) for influenza, Sambucol, an elderberry extract, has been shown to be helpful for influenza.
