In brief: Depends

There are various forms of hypothyroidism, and each is screened for slightly differently.
Just doing a TSH is not very accurate. If you have lots of symptoms of hypothyroidism, consider a full panel including tpo, reverse t3 (liothyronine), (liothyronine) and free t3 (liothyronine). More info on: http://drfairchild.Blogspot.Com/2012/12/proper-thyroid-testing.Html.

In brief: Blood levels

Hypothyroidism is condition when thyroid fxn is low.
Many associated symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, poor appetitie, depression, thinning hair, dry skin, palpitations, swelling, constipation and other symptoms. The best way to screen is with a TSH level. There are other thyroid test that can be ordered as wll. Most symptoms are vague , so seeing doctor is usually needed.
