In brief: Vaginal pap

The hpv virus has many subtypes.
The transition zone of the cervix is where they are most active, but they can also act on the wall of the vagina. Vaginal dysplasia and cancer are more rare than cervical, but they still are screened for using a pap smear.

The abnormal Pap was of the vagina. Having a hysterectomy does NOT eliminate your risks from HPV because the virus can cause abnormal cells in the vagina.

In brief: HPV risks aft HYST

The pap smear samples cells wherever it is used.
In the absence of a cervix the cells at the top of the vagina are tested. Those cells and all vaginal and vulvar cells are subject to hpv viral influence, dysplasia and cancer. It is a mistake to assume that hysterectomy ends vaginal / pelvic cancer risk. It only reduces the risk. Certainly ; if the ovaries remain, continued diligence must remain.
