Surgery

In brief: Yes

Yes, the only way to heal an umbilical hernia is by fixing it with surgery.
Typically patients have discomfort for 1-2 weeks after surgery. You should not lift anything over 10 lbs. For 6 weeks to prevent recurrence and to help with wound healing.

In brief: It depends,4-6 weeks

Small asymptomatic umbilical hernias can be managed individually: watched/expectant, repaired.
If you do not plan to move to a undeveloped country, you can wait for either the hernia to get larger or when it starts to bother you to get it fixed. If the hernia is causing some discomfort and/ or you work=out a lot you should consider elective hernia repair. It is low risk and a short recovery(4-6 weeks.
