In brief: 3-6 months

The recovery continues for 6 months or more.
The most rapid phase is in the first 6 weels. At that time most patients will still have start up stiffness, mild swelling, difficulty sleeping through the night, and may still be taking pain medication. Those symptoms will gradually resolve by 3 months after surgery and patients will have returned to most all of their preoperative activities.

In brief: It depends

Ususally it ranges from 1-6 months.
It should not be painful as more modern intra-operative and post-op pain control are available. Regarding rsd, this is usually a clinical diagnosis and there is no laboratory test for it. There are specific criteria to be met to consider rsd or the new term is crps (complex regional pain syndrome). An evaluation by a qualified pain specialist can help.
