How closely related is depression and bipolar? What's the difference between them and can I give myself a self diagnosise?

In brief: Depression

Depression can be single episode or recurrent many times.
But it's always depression. Bipolar has depression almost always( rarely just mania) but also has mania or hypomania , a milder manic state. There's lots more complexity there, but that is basically it. Do not self diagnose. See a psychiatrist for evaluation.
