My fingers have been getting increasingly painful over the last 4 months, to the extent that it hurts to hold a cup of coffee or squeeze a sponge out?

In brief: Finger pain

Without knowing the other symptoms and your medical history it is difficult to say exactly what is causing this.
If you have numbness in your fingers, you may have a nerve compression such as carpal tunnel syndrome. If it is pain/aching in your joints it could be a type of arthritis. You should start by seeing your primary doctor who may want to get xrays, emg, start a splint, or some other tests.
