In brief: Thick Heart Muscle
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (abnormally thickened heart muscle) is a genetic condition that is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in children.
The heart is made up of 4 chambers and it is the lower left one that pumps blood to the body through the aorta. With hcm the thickened muscle surrounding the aorta can block the opening, preventing blood from getting to the body, leading to death.
