What are typical causes of a hiatel hernia? Can it be the cause of shortness of breath. Heart work up is ok but have a snall hiatel hernia and reflux
Hiatal hernia. It can be, but generally only large hiatal hernias cause shortness of breath. Heart work up being negative is good. Now go see a pulmonologist.
Birth defect. Most people with hiatal hernias are born with them. Being overweight/obese may make the hernia worse; reflux may lead to mild cough or shortness of breath, which can worsen if the reflux leads to repeated episodes of acid going into the lungs (aspiration). There are many other causes of shortness of breath, the most common being out of shape. See a pulmonologist and get checked out.
Could my hital hernia cause shortness of breath when eating. If so is it dangerous. If not could it be my mvp with heart murmur Help??
Shortness of breath. Shortness of breath can be caused by lots of things, from asthma to anxiety. Histal hernia generally won't cause it. Nor will mitral valve prolapse. However the anxiety that sometimes goes along with the mitral valve prolapse diagnosis could. Have you had allergies or asthma? Do you only get short of breath under stress or with exercise? Hiatal hernia. When you eat your stomach becomes more full and if more of your stomach is in the chest (this is what a hiatal hernia is) then it takes up space that could be used for breathing otherwise. People with hiatal hernias also frequently have acid reflux disease as well and this can affect breathing. This is unlikely to have anything to do with your MVP or heart murmur. Read more...
