In brief: High fiber diet

A diet high in fiber (lots of fruits & vegetables in particular) & low in starchy foods (such as rice, bread, potatoes, pasta, waffles) or other constipating foods like bananas, cheese & milk should help.
Lots of water & occasionally juice (apple, prune, or pear) can also help. Some doctors recommend a fiber supplement (bebefiber/ fiber gummies) or MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) (an otc laxative)- ask your doctor first.

And applesauce can be good too.

If the constipation is longstanding, the options also need to be long term. A laxative can help short term, but as Dr. Roberts responded, natural dietary fiber is key. Exercise and activity also helps get the GI tract on more of a schedule so that the natural poop signal, often during school hours, might be shifted to a more tolerated time of day!

In brief: Constipation

The best treatment of constipation is increase fiber intake in food.
Giving your child 5 servings of fruits and vegetables is helpful. Add more water to the diet helps alot. Trial of prune juice helps too.
