In brief: A lot!

Car seats are one of the most important advances in child safety! it is absolutely essential that you learn how to adjust your car seat, how to fit it properly in your car, and how to make sure it fits your baby well as he/she grows.
Infants should always ride in the back seat, rear facing for at least one year. Never put an infant car seat in the front seat of a car.

In brief: Standards change

The first safety seats in the 70's have gone thru many modifications over the years as crash analysis/survival data have become available.
Seats sold in discount outlets often reflect older technology or less flexability. Kids should rear face until 2-3yr, be harnessed as long as possible and never move to the belt alone until 4'7''. See www.Nhtsa.Gov;www.Chop.Edu/carseat.
