Is it safe to remove mirena (levonorgestrel) yourself?

Unsafe, let MD inspct. The Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD is one of the BEST forms of birth control available, why remove it? If it's causing pain or some problems it's still better to see the doctor for it to be removed to ensure that there weren't any defects of the IUD and to see if you wanted something else for birth control. Don't remove it yourself b/c you may end up causing unnecessary vaginal abrasions.

If you have had the mirena (levonorgestrel) removed and the very next day you start the birth control pill will you be safe?

Not necessarily. Mirena (levonorgestrel) and birth control pills work in different ways. Whether you would be safe would depend on what day of your menstrual month you had the Mirena (levonorgestrel) removed. Since many women on Mirena (levonorgestrel) don't have periods, its hard to know where you are. I wouldn't count on being protected but would plan to use a back-up method until you have a period. .
