The current practice guidelines for tonsillectomy are for when the patient has 3 infections a year for 3 years in a row, 5 in 2 years, or 7 in one year. These are guidelines, not rules.
Sometimes the patient has other mitigating factors lead to the decision for tonsillectomy even after one severe episode of tonsillitis
