In brief: TSH

Tsh levels in hypothyroid individuals are usually elevated above normal, and then with successful treatment drop into the normal range.
Tsh is the pituitary hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland. If the pituitary senses there is enough thryroid hormone in the blood, it decreases the amount of TSH to keep from overstimulation of the thyroid gland.

In brief: TSH IS USED TO:

Tsh is the primary lab test used to guide treatment and monitor the illness.
Clinical signs and symptoms are equally important, some mds feel more important in monitoring hypothyroidism. Current approaches strive for a TSH in the 1.5 or less range, staying above the lower normal range which varies between labs~0.010. Symptoms may or may not fall in line with the #s. This requires expertise.
