In brief: Gain usually

Alcohol is broken down into carbohydrates - with little to no true nutritional value- ie: not a fat or protein, or fruit or vegetable with vitamins.
While a small glass of alcohol daily has shown benefit with the mediterranean diet, more than that daily is just extra calories.

Alcohol can also loosen inhibitions, and cause someone to eat more than they had intended, leading to weight gain.

In brief: Two ways

Immediately after..
.. Your weight drops because its a diuretic . Long term it adds pounds because most are high in calories. But a long term alcoholic is frequently thin because that don't eat, only drink, and their liver is not functioning.
