In brief: Keep moving
The more you work on walking, the faster you heal.
Push yourself to go farther, go longer each day, with assistance.

In brief: Treadmill or bike
Will certainly help you get your independence back.
You don't have to walk to get back walking. A treadmill with bars will help. A recumbent bike is great, but the best therapy if you have access is pool therapy, which could be as simple as walking for thirty minutes in waist deep water. Most ymca s have indoor pools and memberships for 30-40 dollars a month.
