In brief: Joint or nerve

The pain can be from a number of locations depending site and referral of pain.
If primarily in midline of back and then travels across rub cage it could be disc issue or an intercostal nerve pain. Identify if back pain is at same level as referred flank pain. Make sure to rule out any abdominal issues which may be related to eating, bowel movements, urination, also consider a muscle issue.
