Mostly just the first month. Some continue into the second month. May also depend on why IUD was placed. (Contraception vs bleeding).

Agree with Dr. Livingston, although if you had the Mirena IUD placed (progesterone-containing), you may have spotting throughout the life of the device, but your periods are likely to become much later and will probably stop (a good thing).

It is not uncommon to have spotting for a few days after insertion. It may even last a few weeks. With the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud, because it has a low dose progesterone, it may even cause irregular cycles / spotting ... This is not common, and the vast majority of patients report light periods or no periods.
