Are there sleep meds that induce sleep but don't impair judgement - if I have to get up4kidmergency?

In brief: Nothing great

There are no great choices with sleep meds as far as avoiding sleepiness the next day.
Closest is probably a newer drug called rozerem (ramelteon). It works by imitating natural melatonin, a hormone which convinces your brain it's time to sleep. It does not do much to maintain sleep, so if you wake up, you are less groggy, but you might not sleep long. It is new and expensive and insurance coverage is poor.
