In brief: Multiple causes

People can get epilepsy due to genetic factors, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury, infection, stroke, degenerative disease or congenital malformations.

In brief: Bad luck

Epilepsy can happen to anyone.
If you abuse your brain, it may be considered your "fault" but reality is that most cases just happen. Brain injury, brain infection, toxins, tumors, any may happen as just bad luck. Many cases are of unknown cause. Regardless of cause, treatment can be quite good.
