Hard to tell. There is an entity called benign essential edema. However, this should not extend to whole body swelling. It has no obvious reason and responds to salt restriction and water pills. In view of negative work up, make sure you are not taking a medicine that causes swelling like actos, avandia, (rosiglitazone) and norvasc. Seek rare causes. Causes of generalized edema that may be missed on first screen include conn's (rarely causes edema), allergy to a rx (some antihypertensives, nsaids), early diabetes (leaky vessels) or scleroderma, esterase deficiency (unusual), mastocytosis, or even poorly-understood effects from diuretics.
