In brief: Lump
Call your doctor; if ovre age 35 get a mammogram and ultrasound, if under get an ultrasound.
Surgeon referral can follow if needed or if surgeon performs diagnostic ultrasound can go there first.

Age is a factor for screening, but if there is a lump, a diagnostic mammo is indicated to check other lumps, axilla and micro calcifications. U/S distinguishes cysts and characterizes vascularity. Do we need both?
In brief: Exam, imaging
Always start with exam. Though usually more is needed.
Ultrasound and mammogram ( X-ray) can provide helpful information as well. If there is any concern for cancer only a tissue biopsy will do.

Internal Medicine
In brief: Call your doc.
Breast lumps can be benign such as found in fibrocystic breasts.
These lumps tend to be bilateral, cyclical with menstruation, and tender. However if a lump is hard, fixed, non tender, and irregular, medical attention should be sort. A mammogram, ultrasound, and perhaps a biopsy may be ordered to determine if the lump is malignant(cancerous).
