In brief: Yes
Botox has been used for years in many medical applications.
The amount of Botox used for the typical cosmetic treatment of moderate expression lines of the face is 1/10 to 1/3 the amount used in other medical conditions. The biggest contraindications for the general healthy public include pregnancy and breast feeding or active infection at the site of treatment. Hope this helps!

In brief: Yes
Yes, Botox is one of the safest drugs that I know of.
However, like any drug, it can have side effects. It should only be injected by someone who has been trained on how to inject it.

In brief: Not pregnant
The only thing i would add here is that, while I do not offer Botox injections to patients who are pregnant, and i suggest you avoid it if you are or may be pregnant, if you find out later that you were pregnant when you had your Botox injections, i don't think you should worry too much about it as it is very unlikely that there will be any ill effects; it just hasn't been studied.

In brief: Surprisingly safe
When used appropriately, there are almost no reported severe adverse reactions.
This is with 20+ years of experience and millions of injections. Botox is far safer than common medications like aspirin, penicillin and even vitamins. Occasionally, a Botox disaster story is picked up by the news agencies. This has always related to illegal injections and illegal importation from overseas.

In brief: Botox is safe
There are risks with every medicine and treatment that exist, but the numbers of Botox injections that have been done for the last 2+ decades prove that the safety profile of Botox is very high.
There are side effects with all injections but Botox is very well tolerated. Speak with your doctor at length about the risks for you and your condition.

In brief: Small amounts
Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring toxin that can be deadly in large doses.
The purified toxin is used in minute quantities for cosmetic treatments. There has been no reported fatalities or long term adverse reactions with cosmetic use. In fact, Botox is probably the most highly scrutinized pharmaceutic product on the market. Any serious adverse effect would be all over the news.

In brief: Botox is very safe
Botulinum toxin (botox and dysport) have a long track record of safe use.
Problems with botulinum toxin when used by an experienced injector are very rare. Most of the problems i read about come from inexperienced or unqualified injectors. As a good rule of thumb, Botox is ideal for wrinkles in the upper 1/3 of the face. Best wishes!
