Please describe the medication: prednisone?

PREDNISONE A STEROID. Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect on minerals like potassium.
Anti inflammatory. Prednisone is a steroid. Prednisone is used to treat a variety of acute and chronic inflammatory conditions such as asthma, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis. Prednisone like other steroids have many side effects especially if used long term. Common ones: weight gain, osteoporosis, cataracts, diabetes, and infections. However, it tends to work quickly. If used carefully it can be quite effective.
Steroid. It is a type of steroid - corticosteroid - as distinct for anabolic steroids. It is a potent anti-inflammatory medication, which has many side effects, but which can be very effective in some situations. The side effects must be considered versus the benefit.
