What are the signs and treatment options for a broken back?

Pain . Pain is the most common complaint, some patients also have neurological deficits such as numbness or weakness or other neuro deficits based on where the fracture is. If one only has pain and the fracture is stable then it is usually managed with pain meds and sometimes brace. If there are neuro deficits and/or fracture is unstable then usually treated with surgical fixation with fusion.
Broken back . It can be a fracture of the bones or a disruption of the ligaments that requires no treatment, simple rigid bracing, halo fixation, or even surgery. These problems can occur following trauma and are localized to the neck region/cervical, middle back/thoracic, or lower/lumbar, sacral. See a spine specialist concerning your particular injury. Some imaging study will be needed.
