In brief: Over 100 genes
It is now possible to test for over 100 serious recessive genes with a single saliva test.
These would only be a problem for your pregnancy if you and your partner carry the same recessive gene. The testing includes all standard recommended tests and many more. For more information, go to www.Counsyl.Com.

In brief: There are many
There are many screening tests that a patient may undertake to screen for genetic problems.
What needs to be done is a proper family/genetic history and have genetic testing performed based upon that history. Nevertheless, general screeening for genetic problems will be offered by your obstetrician at different times during your pregnancy (ex.: down's syndrome testing).

In brief: Genetic test in preg
There are two genetic tests available in pregnancy.
One at 10 weeks called cvs which obtains a tiny bit of the placenta for testing, and one at 16 weeks called amniocentesis which obtains fetal cells from the amniotic fluid. Both are fairly accurate and give a genetic picture of your baby. Both are relatively low risk if performed by an experienced physician.

In brief: CVS and nuchal fold
Cvs is a test in which tissue is taken from the placenta, grown out and broken down into chromosomes.
This will tell is your baby has down's or other chromosome problems. It's done at 10-12 weeks and has a 1 in 100 risk of pregnancy loss. Nuchal fold is done at 11-13 weeks. It's a combination of blood tests and an us. It gives a risk, not a diagnosis but there is no risk to the pregnancy.
