Could being a vegetarian be causing my ibs? I've read that those who return to eating meat have their IBS symptoms go away and have more energy.

In brief: Avoid specific foods

Being a vegetarian per se does not worsen ibs, but certain foods that you may be eating more often may aggravate it.
No single diet works for everyone, but ibs can be worsened by wheat, dairy, beans/legumes & certain fruits & vegetables. But eggs, nuts, seeds, meats & many fruits & vegies are ok. For more specific info see http://ibs.About.Com/od/ibsfood/a/ibsdiet.Htm & http://fodmapsdiet.Com/.

In brief: Multifactorial cause

Irritable bowel syndrome is the multifactorial consequence of hormonal, immune system and nervous system dysfunction resulting from genetic predispositions and dietary and environmental insults.
The predominant symptoms like diarrhea cramps constipation are the result of autonomic nervous system instability. A veggie diet especially if high in soy could definitely make your symptoms much worse.
