In brief: Most likely not ear
95% of patients i see with ear aches have completely normal ears.
What they have is aching around their ears - most commonly in and around their jaw joints. Gum chewing, jaw clenching, teeth grinding and generalized stress is usually responsible. If your hearing is normal your discomfort is most likely your jaw. Try a soft diet, advil (ibuprofen) and ice 3-4 times a day where it hurts. If no better see an ent.

Family Medicine
In brief: See your doctor
Earache can be caused by several problems: you can have an infection in the middle ear (behind the eardrum) which is treated with antibiotics, you could have an infection in the canal (otitis externa) which may be treated with ear drops.
You can also get earache from change in pressure (diving, airplanes), trauma, or loud noise. Congestion from allergies can sometimes cause mild pain/congestion.
