In brief: Around ovulation
The egg can be fertilized for only 1 day after ovulation, so it's best to have intercourse (ic) around this time.
If your cycle is 28-32 days, have ic on day 12, 14, and 16 (or 13, 15, and 17). If cycle is 26 days, then ic every other day starting on day 10. For best result use urine LH kit to detect ovulation. Check test between 10-noon. When test is positive, have ic everyday for next 3 days.

In brief: Midcycle
Sex early and late in your cycle usually will not result in pregnancy.
The midcycle or about 14 days before your expected period is the most fertile time. Everyday and every other day are best. Pregnancy rates decrease with every 3 to 4 days, but are still good. Every 5 days or less really compromises your chances of attaining pregnancy.

In brief: Doesn't matter
Precisely timed intercourse does not improve your chances of pregnancy.
This is one of those myths that can cause a lot of stress. If you want to have a baby, try to have sex about twice a week. If you don't feel like it - don't force yourself. If you are not pregnant after 6 months of unprotected intercourse (12 months if you are under 35 years old), then please see your doctor.
