In brief: Tinnitus v thumping

Tinnitus is ringing in the ears.
Drumming could mean that, or the feeling of pounding. There are many causes for both. You should have an ENT specialist check you out if it is troublesome or worsening. First, you need to be sure your blood pressure is normal. Here's an interesting link with good information about drumming: http://en.Allexperts.Com/q/audiology-otolaryngology-963/2009/9/.

In brief: Eust. tube dysfxn

Any type of sounds in the ear can be generically labeled as tinnitus.
The "drumming" could be you hearing your own heart beat. You have several major blood vessels travel within millimeters of your ear and the eustachian tube can transmit this sound to your ear. If this tube (connects the nose to the ear) is congested, you might have this problem. Decongestants or nasal sprays may help.
