What is the definition or description of: rhizotomy?

Related to nerves. A rhizotomy is a procedure used to destroy nerve endings to prevent pain signals being sent to the brain. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this. Sometimes a doctor will use heat or chemicals to destroy the nerves. This is used for people who have not responded to more conservative pain treatments such as over the counter medicines or physical therapy.
Rhizo+otomy=root+cut. A rhizome is a latin term for a root and is used in botany as well but in the human is used to refer to nerve roots as they emerge from the spinal cord. When these roots are released or opened by releasing or even destroying them them we refer to this as a rhizotomy.
