In brief: Inflammation

Sounds like you're pretty active.
Probably just minor inflammation. I would rest for one week, try orc meds, ice, knee brace and monitor for progressing symptoms.

In brief: Patellofemoral pain

Your symptoms sound like patellofemoral pain- it is due to a muscle imbalance with relative weakness of the gluteus medius muscle.
This imbalance is common, even in elite athletes. See a sports-oriented physical therapist to work on glute med strengthening and quad/hamstring co-contraction. See sports med doc to make sure there are no other ocntributing factors.
